Rugby On Your Doorstep This Weekend!

This weekend will be a very busy one at Rafeenan. Below is all the fixtures, all of which are at home.

IJM Monaghan 2nd XV 12 Enniskillen 3rd XV 25

The IJM Monaghan 2ndXV continued their league campaign under the floodlights at Rafeenan on Friday night and suffered defeat in an entertaining match.

Enniskillen kicked off on a cold evening and both sides played some nice rugby throughout the opening quarter without either side managing to get on the scoresheet early on. Enniskillen broke the deadlock in the 18th minute with a try in the left hand corner which went unconverted. Monaghan struck back immediately when Simon O’Connell broke through the Enniskillen rearguard to touchdown in the 20th minute. Dwayne Rooney added the conversion to put the home side in front. The lead lasted a mere 5 minutes before a 2nd Enniskillen try put them back in front. With no further scores in the half, Enniskillen led by 10-7 at the break.

Dwayne Rooney got the second half under way for Monaghan but it was the visitors that were quicker back into their stride and good handling by a number of their players saw them open up the home defence to score an early try which once again went unconverted. An infringement in a ruck in the 48th minute saw the visiting loose head prop sent to the sinbin. Monaghan made good use of their extra man and Marty Mone sped through a gap in the Enniskillen ¾ line to score to the right of the posts. Dwayne Rooney hit the post with the conversion attempt. Within seconds of being returned to their full compliment of 15 players, Enniskillen scored their bonus point try. The conversion attempt fell short leaving the home side trailing by 8 points as the game headed into the final quartet. Dermod O’Hanlon went close to closing the gap in the 64th minute as he chased a Dwayne Rooney kick to the right hand corner. Although he managed to retrieve possession, he was tackled to touch a yard from the corner flag. Dwayne Rooney tapped a penalty 5 meters from the Enniskillen line a minute later, but was turned over within inches of the line. Enniskillen made the game safe with their 5th unconverted try in the 72nd minute. Enniskillen finished the game with 14 men as referee Kevin Murnaghan issued them with their 2nd yellow card of the night in the 73rd minute for a blatant obstrtuction on Dwayne Rooney as he chased a kick into the Enniskillen 22. Try as they might, the Monaghan lads were unable to make the extra man count and the game finished on a final score of IJM Monaghan 2ndXV 12 Enniskillen 3rdXV 25.

The 2ndXV now have a few weeks off and next play on Friday 25th Feb when they head to Enniskillen for the return fixture. This weekends action at Rafeenan sees Coleraine visit for a 2nd round Towns Cup game with IJM Monaghan 1stXV. Kick off will be at 2.30pm and will be preceded by a prematch lunch. A fiercely contested second half saw both sides score two further tries with Armagh’s winning try scored at the final whistle. Full time score Monaghan 22 – 26 Armagh.

Strabane 0 Monaghan 26

The IJM Monaghan 1stXV went to Strabane on Saturday and recorded a bonus point win whilst holding their hosts scoreless in the Kukri Ulster Rugby Championship div 3. The IJM Monaghan team, in a match sponsored by Bridge Gymnastics, had a somewhat unfamiliar look due to a number of changes and positional switches.

Gareth Graham kicked off for Monaghan and the game quickly settled into a pattern of IJM Monaghan dominating possession whilst Strabane tackled ferociously, regularly sending the Monaghan ball carriers backwards in the tackle. Gareth Graham had a chance to open the scoring in the 6th minute but his penalty shot from 45 meters went to the right of the posts. He had another penalty shot from long distance in the 13th minute but was a little short on this occasion. In the 18th minute, Gareth Graham turned down another long range penalty shot at goal settling instead for good field position deep inside the Strabane 22. Marc McArdle caught the throw to the rear of the lineout and Monaghan went to the lineout maul which Strabane succeeded in stopping a meter short of the goal line. The ball was recycled quickly and Jamie Sheridan’s pass found Jamie Sherlock near the left hand corner flag and Sherlock dived over to score. Gareth Graham found the target with an excellent conversion from the touchline. Strabane found themselves down to 14 men in the 24th minute as their right winger was yellow carded for a high tackle on Carl Foentjies. Gareth Graham found a good touch inside the 22 with the resulting penalty as Monaghan attempted to repeat their earlier try move. However, a knock on after 5 phases of play saw the move breakdown. A period of Strabane pressure inside the Monaghan 22 with 5 minutes of the half remaining tested the visitors defence but they succeeded in keeping their hosts out thanks to some great tackling by Christopher Brady and Daniel McGregor in particular. The pressure was relieved when Malcolm Allister stole the ball at a ruck and Fergal O’Dowd kicked long to touch. The half time score stood at Strabane 0 IJM Monaghan 7.

Monaghan made a couple of changes at the break. A foot injury saw Jamie Sherlock being replaced and Christopher Brady move to the front row with Aogan Smith coming on and Steven Clerkin moving into the pack. Andrew McPhillips made his Monaghan senior debut as he replaced Donatas Jonkas. Strabane got the 2nd half underway and the game settled into a familiar pattern early in the half. Monaghan wasted a good chance from a 5 meter lineout after 54 minutes but were now starting to play a more expansive game. In the 58th minute, Rory McKenna stole a Strabane lineout throw inside the Monaghan 22. A long Carl Foentjies pass found Andrew McPhillips who beat a number of tacklers as he ran into the Strabane half. He found Gareth Graham running a good line inside him when he was eventually halted and Graham had enough pace to score a try in the right hand corner. He failed to land the conversion. Strabane had a penalty shot at goal in the 62nd minute but it dropped under the crossbar. Monaghan extended their lead after 65 minutes. Having worked the ball left across the backline from a lineout, play was switched back to the right. Gareth Graham spotted that the defence had been pulled across also and his kick to the right of the 22 was well chased by Malcolm Allister who was tackled just short of the line. Marc McArdle was on hand to pick up the ball and dive over for a try which Gareth Graham added the extras. Malcolm Allister was yellow carded in the 73rd minute for an infringement at a ruck. Strabane thought they had scored a try in the 78th minute and so did referee Jarvis Traynor momentarily until he realised that he had been codded by pitch markings which erroneously had the 5 meter line marked similarly to the goal line. After a couple of scrums Monaghan lifted the siege and Carl Foentjies slipped through a couple of tackles before setting Andrew McPhillips away the length of the field to score under the posts. Gareth Graham converted to leave the full time score, Strabane 0 IJM Monaghan 26.

This was a good effort from the Monaghan lads away from home which sees them collect their 3rd 5 point haul on the spin. Malcolm Allister was superb in the loose upfront and Marc McArdle lorded the back of the lineout winning an amount of good possession from accurate throws from Malcolm Allister. Andrew McPhillips made a big impact on his introduction to the ¾ line. Monaghan are back at home next weekend when they take on high flying Newry on Saturday afternoon (2.30pm KO)

Lovely morning for rugby

The Cni Ireland Monaghan RFC Mini Rugby teams travel to County Cavan Rugby Club

Saturday last was another lovely morning for rugby, played in great spirit with Cavan RFC. Over 120 Monaghan Mini rugby players made the trip to our neighbouring county, thanks to their wonderful taxi drivers!

U7s had 3 exciting games running at once, with their coaches proud of all the improvements shown on the pitch, they played really well and enjoyed every minute.

U8s took on a strong Cavan side but the players put on a great performance to edge ahead. A few areas to work on in training next week but a positive display of rugby.

U9s worked hard and showed off the skills they have been practicing at training, with enthusiasm and energy throughout.

U10s had a brilliant performance, with huge credit to the players, they stepped up in their tackling and teamwork resulting in some great tries.

U11s showed great heart, acquitting themselves very well against a physically strong Cavan outfit. Their 2 games were intense but the team continues to improve in leaps and bounds, with new members influencing their team’s performance.

U12s had 2 tough games, highlighting the need to maintain the intensity shown in training but the players kept battling to the end, fantastic spirit.

We are delighted to see our Mini Rugby teams progressing with each game played after so long out of action last season.

Thanks to Cavan Rugby Club for being fantastic hosts, a great morning was had by all.

A superb result for Ireland too vs New Zealand, to top off a fantastic day of rugby.

Training continues for all Mini rugby players this Saturday morning at normal times ahead of our fixtures in Omagh Accies Mini Rugby on the 27th November.
